Hermine David, accepted in 1902 at the age of 16 into L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (open to women only 2 years prior), showed regularly at the Salon des Femmes Peintres from 1905 onward. When she met Jules Pascin in 1907 she was already well established as a successful young painter, miniaturist and printmaker. She quickly became Pascin's steady companion; they lived in a series of studios in Montmartre and Montparnasse before travelling to America in 1915, where they married a few years later. During their 5-year stay in the United States, David exhibited in New York; after returning to France in 1920, she was given an exhibition in London and several one-person shows at prominent Paris galleries. With her scrupulous eye, her mastery of spatial composition, and the rich textures of her drypoints, David was widely appreciated by critics and collectors. While her finest work dates to the 1920's and 1930's, including the book illustrations for which she developed a passion in the 1920's, she was active into the 1960's, winning a watercolor prize at the Biennale de Deauville in 1965. She died in 1970.
